Pigeons are much more than those birds that hang around urban centers hoping for a handout. Do we do an injustice to them, those of us who denigrate them, who insist on signs prohibiting feeding them, who grimace and try to avoid them? I was one of those people. Until I learned the truth about these devoted messengers, these warriors, these handsome, sweet birds. How quickly ignorance can lead to condeming a whole species. How quickly the end of ignorance can bring not just tolerance but appreciation.
I recently wrote a love letter to them. Yes, to pigeons. I couldn’t tolerate my own attitude or that nasty expression that took over my face every time I saw even a small flock of them. I knew it was unfair. To them and to me. So, I decided to look into the truth about pigeons.
Writing a letter of appreciation is a chance to bathe in the positive. Writing an apology is flat-out soothing. I needed to apologize to them. I needed to do it for myself.
Just for the joy of them, listen here to a most remarkable story of these heroes as seen through my expression of regret.
